There are as many natural depression treatments as there are types of depression. Which treatment you choose depends on what works for you as a unique individual.
I have done a great deal of research and have observed what natural depression treatments have worked best for my clients and I have come up with the top 5, in my opinion, that work the best. In the meantime, here are 5 simple strategies that have worked for my clients. Simple strategies you can use to help improve your depressed state.
1) Surround yourself with supportive people
It is so important to surround yourself with people who are supportive, positive and non-judgemental. People who believe in you. People who you can rely on when you need to reach out. This is so important since most people with depressed feelings usually feel very lonely. Don't isolate yourself. Allow yourself to trust in a few people that you know will be there for you yet not enable you. By "enable" I mean someone that will let you wallow in your own self pity. You want someone who will support you yet encourage you to move beyond the depressive state and learn to become a happy, productive person again!
2) Relaxation / Meditation
It is very important to give yourself some "down time". As one of the natural depression treatments, you can't beat it! Time to tune out the rest of the world and connect to your inner being. The amazing soul that you really are! There are tons of resources on the topic both on and off the net! Look around and go for what grabs you. Learn to relax, release stress and just be "at one with the moment".
3) Get Up and Move!
Exercise is very important. It has been scientifically proven that exercise, even just 20 mins a day, can release endorphins that help you manage stress and sadness. It has been proven to help with so many physical ailments such as diabetes, heart disease as well as menal ailments like feeling of low self worth, sadness, loneliness. Take just 20 mins a day to exercise but do what you like to do so it will be fun! If you don't like to run, don't run! Dance, flow, move, stomp, jump, kick, even scream. The point is to move your energy and become healthier from the inside out!
4) Embark on a Healthy Diet
Yeah, I know, it one of the obvious natural depression treatments and we hear this over and over again. However, it is one of the most difficult to do - especially if you use food as a way to comfort yourself. However, it is so important for all of us to commit to living a healthier lifestyle and this includes the way we eat! My personal rule is to eat what "comes from a plant" not what's "made in a plant". I try to eat foods that come straight from the source and are not processed. When I eat this way, I have so much more energy, I feel better about myself, I feel better about who I am! It is amazing how just this one change can make a huge difference.
5) Get Plenty of Sleep
Yes, sleep makes a huge difference. And, it may even appear somewhat ironic that this is on my list as one of the natural depression treatments since depressed individuals usually experience insomnia (can't sleep) or hypersomnia (sleeping too much). However, adeqauate sleep can and will make a huge difference. And, note that I mention this last because if you do all the other things on the list... exercise, eat right, meditate/relax, find support....you will find that you will sleep a whole lot better!!
