There are several herbs that are considered to be effective in learning how to overcome depression. These include the following:

  • St. John's Wort - This is best for someone struggling with a Bipolar Disorder or a more severe depressive disorder and should not be taken by someone with minor depressive symptoms

  • 5-HTP - This is an herb derivative and is somewhat controversial. It is important to do further research before choosing this as an alternative

  • SAM-e - Also known as S-Adenosyl-Methionine which improves the functioning of the neurotransmitters. SAM-e is something that we produce naturally. However, when we don't produce enoughn a SAM-e supplement can be used effectively as a natural anti-depressant. In fact, Europe has been using this for a very long time. It is important to note that this is not recommended for individuals with Bipolar Disorder.

  • Kava - it comse from kavalactones that are found in the dried rhizome of a plant. Another herb that Europe has been using for a long time and it is just becoming known here in the U.S. Kava is good because it comes with minimal side effects.

Again, while natural alternatives like this can be effective do your research first. Particularly since they are not regulated. More often than not, people assume that since it's "natural" it's safe. This is not the case. Also, it is a known fact that a lot of herbal supplements are not "natural" rather they are made in a manufacturing plant, one that does not have to adhere to the stringent laws that other food or medical plants have to adhere to.

With that said, herbal remedies can be a great way to treat depressive disorders. Do you know of any herbal remedies that have worked for you? The list above is certainly not comprehensive by any means. What have you tried? Do you know of any herbs for depression that work well?
