Upon this bridge

by Joel Saterfiel
(Melbourne Fl)

upon this bridge

his gaze it yurns
as it stands so tall
among these shallow ferns
it looks over the city
and dreams of a visit
from a person who dearly
desires to end it
it says please come up
to the middle of me
I will show you how
to be truly free
the words he heard were soothing
like a blanket on the mind
see his heart wanted death
and death it would find
but the part of him
that really cares
couldn't stop his feet
going up the stairs
and as he reached the top
and walked to the middle
the bridge said good job
now this part is simple
climb upon the ledge
if you wish to be free
then take a big step
and free you will be
but as he was falling
a pain struck his heart
for those that would learn
of his desperate depart
and as for the bridge
well the bridge just smiled
for he that had jumped
was only a child
